Aircel’s App stores

Aircel has become the first service operator in the country to launch a full fledged application store in collaboration with Infosys. Interestingly, world over, it is usually the handset vendors which have successful application stores like Apple and BlackBerry. Gurdeep Singh, COO, Aircel, says, “The reason as to why the service operators across the world have not been able to have a successful App store is because of the kind of energy it requires. We have an open developers community and the backing of Infosys would help us in getting a host of applications.” Technology will be a differentiating factor but the most notable feature of this application store from Aircel would be that it won’t just be a smartphone driven phenomena that most applications stores (like that of BlackBery, Apple, Nokia, Verizon)are, but it would also support applications driven on Voice and even SMS.

What’s in the name

Just months after ratan tata showcased the nano, rajiv Bajaj is ready with his prototype of the small car in alliance with Renault. However, the small car plans of the Bajaj-Renault JV haven’t really been able to match the pace of the former so far. In fact, the prototype that was showcased in 2008 carried a Bajaj logo, but during his last visit, Carlos Ghosn, CEO, Renault, said that there were some branding issues and Bajaj Auto may not get a place for its logo on the car. But then, one should not forget that Renault has not yet tasted success on the Indian turf. While its JV with M&M is riding through choppy waters (with the falling sales of Logan, its tie-up with Ashok Leyland too is on the rough lane. This makes it all the more imperative for the French automaker to get its small car strategy right in India. “Keeping in mind the size and potential of the Indian small car market, getting the small car right will be vital for both Bajaj and Renault,” explains auto expert Tutu Dhawan. Moreover, there will be millions of Tata Nano running on the road by the time the duo launches its product in 2013. So, before thinking of giving competition to Nano, Renault should re-consider putting Bajaj’s logo on the small car as despite being new to the four-wheeler industry, the small car may benefit from Bajaj’s existing brand equity in the country.

Doodle and Google!!

You must have seen a Google Doodle (creative Google logos) on Google homepage on some special days like historic or seasonal events, and other local occasions. In order to woo school going kids this children’s day, Google India organised its first ever doodling competition called Doodle4Google. The contest was for students from 1st-10th and they had to imagine their own version of the Google logo, inspired by the theme “My India”. The kid who won the contest was Puru Pratap Singh. His Doodle appeared on Google Homepage on 14th November, apart from other incentives he got for winning the contest. Smart way to occupy mind space with future Google users, what say?

Religion: Off the Shelf

IIPM, GURGAON

And you thought that religion is fading in cities and among the educated? Check this. A survey by Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) has already established that the stress of urban living is pushing people to search for anchors in their lives, which they recreate through religion. The survey found that 93% Indians – irrespective of education – believe in God; 64% visit a temple, mosque or gurudwara regularly and 53% offer prayers daily. It’s almost as if the till recently subdued religious fabric of a nation is now seeking manifestation in the conspicuous consumption that defines modern times. And as the daily grind becomes more hectic & competitive, “quick connects” with god are fast gaining momentum. On the one hand are Gayatri Mantra or Hanuman Chalisa ringtones, while on the other are guys providing services like online prayers and mobile donations.

Even deity statue makers are carving their own special niche in this godly industry. And while most statue purchases are still made through the unorganised market, some organised players are stepping in to take advantage, with Lladro being a key player among the latter. Indian mythological and religion inspired arts and sculptures in fact contribute over 20% of Lladro’s entire turnover. Says Sachin Jain, Senior Brand Manager at Lladro: “We are not a religious commodity brand; instead we are a brand that sells emotions, art and lifestyle.” Lladro began its Indian religious tryst with Ganesha idols in the year 2001. And when the 2,000 piece limited edition was a super success worldwide, Lladro successfully created and began selling Radha Krishna idols. “Then we created Lakshmi, which has been our best selling product in the world,” adds Jain. When they began crafting Lakshmi wares, they priced them starting Rs.1.64 lakh a piece. The same art is being sold at Rs.7.5 lakh a piece today. As per Jain, with the Lladro Lakhsmi their customers possess a unique statement of art. “And so we call it a lifestyle statement,” he says. Jain and others of his ilk are now awaiting the peak sales and marketing season of Diwali. Having already sunk huge moolah into tracking and maintain close relationship with customer, Jain particularly is confident about customer loyalty in the upcoming Diwali season.

Even travel companies are cashing in by organising religious yatras for the young and old alike. Talking to the magazine, Arup Sen, Executive Director, Cox & Kings reveals, “Of the estimated 400 million journeys undertaken by Indians every year domestically, close to 100 million journeys (nearly a fourth) are to pilgrimage centres like Tirupati, Shirdi, Golden Temple or even the Char Dham Yatra.” And the numbers are swelling. As per the estimates of Cox & Kings, the growth in this segment ranges between 25-30% across age groups and socio-economic profiles. No surprise that they’ve priced their services straddling the lowest and highest rungs (starting from Rs.5,869 to Rs.1,67,000 per person) of the market. Industry estimates peg the annual pilgrimage to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine alone at about Rs.474 crore every year.

This brings us to where the big monies really lie viz. the temples, mosques and churches, which are fast modernising their marketing and services to keep pace with the times and growing demand. And, leading the race are the gurus that claim to take you a step closer to spirituality and well being.

A can of ‘Windows’

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Microsoft is now starting its own exclusive stores to revitalise its branding image. But the strategy is deeply flawed, says Karan Mehrishi of 4Ps B&M

“If it didn’t work the first time, go back to basics,” at first it might seem that software giant Microsoft has got nothing to do with this saying; a recent event has changed perspectives in a big way. For the uninformed, the Seattle-based company is all set to unleash a concept that brings it back to the basic ‘brick and mortar’ model. Soon, Microsoft will launch its very own specialty retail stores across America that will deal exclusively in Microsoft’s product portfolio. For the purpose, Microsoft has hired David Porter as the Corporate V-P for this new experiment. Porter has been proclaimed a wise choice, as he brings twenty five years worth of experience with none other than the retail giant WalMart.

These stores, known as ‘Gurus’, will sell almost all Microsoft products including the Windows series software, Xbox and compatible games. There will be a plethora of Microsoft branded products under one roof and the company plans to bring in more branded merchandise in its purlieu. Analysts see this as a strategy to increase customer touch points and have a branding platform to revitalise the sagging Microsoft brand. The dissatisfactory performance of Vista has been a cause of concern for the software giant and the new retail stores may be used to revitalise this platform. Apparently, the company now feels that consumer association can be accessed only through personalised solutions via a brand specific conduit. Microsoft has been constantly working towards making its brand more effective. The company has lately been working with hardware partners to check flaws in the Windows platform and ways to improve performance. According to Brad Brooks, Corporate V-P (Window Consumer product marketing), “We want to know how customers’ experience not only products, but the company itself… we did our own studies to evaluate not only how our products work for the average person, but how our business works for them.” These stores not only offer the consumer a full range of product portfolio but also guarantee a holistic customer involvement. “Customers have told us they want Microsoft to play a more active role in their technology experiences,” adds Brooks. Additionally, other brand extensions or non-related items can also be used to utilise the full potential of this concept. Also, there is much heartburn in the Microsoft camp over the lead taken by Apple in its brand promotion through a catchy product line-up and zingy branding exercises. According to some estimates, Apple stores are highly profitable and have in fact promoted ‘brand Apple’ better than any other exercise in Apple’s history. Even if Microsoft does not need much direct marketing in its primary business, i.e software, the brand was suffering from the ‘long in the tooth syndrome’. “We must deliver a world-class shopping experience that aligns with the brand promise and our online presence,” says Bill Veghte, Senior V-P (Windows Business Group).

27Shopping experience indeed. But with what? Zune, Windows 7 and Xbox? Or would it be with special movie screenings on the making of Bill Gates or Steve Balmer? Yes, they can provide servicing of computers running Microsoft software, but that’s not an easy proposition, thanks to the compatibility issues that Microsoft software faces with different softwares. If they sell products of a few windows PC makers, they could end up alienating the others. Considering these factors, one wonders how they justify the real estate space and the costs involved. Moreover, other partner retailers of Microsoft are hardly amused, as they would have to compete with the ‘mother ship’ now. Rather than being an act of exceptional genius, this seems to be an inexcusable strategic blunder on the part of the company as of now.

Reliance on, Sensex gone!

1500-plus IIPM students placed across the country with 44 bagging international offers

Reliance Power, which had no assets, little cash flow and just the Reliance tag to its credit, launched some smart advertising to launch the mother of all IPOs in January this year. Oversubscribed 72 times, this one created stock market history. But soon after, the markets went into a tailspin from which they’ve not recovered till date. This was also the first time that a company had floated a 360 degree brand campaign to boost investor sentiment, before an IPO. Soon others like Fortis and Emaar also replicated this concept but with little success. R-Power started a new trend, which may eventually return, once the markets show some signs of recovery.

No fireworks this Diwali...

IIPM Admission Detail

This Diwali seems a quiet one for the movie marketers. The fireworks that generally surround Bollywood around Diwali season are missing.Though there are some major releases like Golmal returns, Fashion, and Roadside Romeo scheduled for this Diwali, there is not even 1/5th of the buzz that generally surrounds the festive season. "There are good films lined up but surely this is not a huge Diwali for Bollywood," avers Rauf Ahmed, renowned film critic & ex-editor, Filmfare. Many attribute this missing hype to no Shahrukh or Akshay release in this festive season. "If SRK's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was to be released there would have been much noise on the marketing front," says a media analyst.

Domino effect...

IIPM, GURGAON

But isn’t Big Mac (McDonald’s) considered the most economical product in the QSR category? And if Domino’s is intending to compete with dosa and chole batore, then what about Mac Aloo Tikki Burger? Well, the competing products do remain, and some other competitor will surely launch a similar low-priced product soon, but Domino’s wants to do more... It plans to lure consumers with new launches through 360 degree ad-campaigns coupled with a new tagline ‘kushion ki delivery.’ Dev Amritesh, CMO, Domino’s Pizza India Ltd., while explaining the concepts behind the new TVC, points out that, “The new tagline & promotional acts would address the emotional proposition more, and that’s the reason we say kushio ki delivery...”

The strategy is clearly to cajole the consumers emotionally, but at the same time the company is not planning to do away with its on-time delivery anytime soon. After a clear dominance in the home-delivery segment, the real question that comes in mind is its future plans to improve its situation in the ‘sit & dine’ segment. “We are doing phenomenally well, in the sit & dine segment too, in which we grew by 55% over last year. Specially in tier-II cities like Nasik, Panipath et al, our restaurant segment is really doing well,” claims Ajay. Not a hollow boast, as Domino’s is aggressively mushrooming even in those places where others haven’t forayed-in yet. For numbers, Domino’s has rolled out as many as 210 stores across the country (Pizza Hut has 100 stores, McDonald’s 130) and in most of these towns & cities, where Domino’s is having a roll, Pizza Hut isn’t present yet!

Financially, launching a typical Domino’s outlet (being smaller than a Pizza Hut outlet), requires lesser capital. But that really doesn’t tantamount to an advantage as my Sunday dinner proved... Therefore, besides multi-locational expansions, Domino’s should immediately upgrade all its stores, as an industry analyst warns, “In the hospitality segment, a slight difference in service from a well-known brand can prove a disaster...” But then, it’s also true that in places like tier-I and tier-II, where Pizza Hut is absent, Domino’s is having a gala time. With the sit & dine segment contributing to 35% of its total turnover, Domino’s can’t let the ‘golden pizza-laying hen’ advantage fade away.

PREETHA REDDY: Gentle healer

IIPM INTERNATIONAL - NEW DELHI, GURGAON & NOIDA

PREETHA REDDY
Gentle healer

Born in Hyderabad, Preetha Reddy spent most of her growing years in Chennai. Unknown to many, she graduated from Kalakshetra under the renowned Rukmini Devi Arundale. While dancing remains her passion to this day, she pursued chemistry as her educational calling. Apollo Hospitals happened to her both by accident and design. When her younger sister Sangeeta decided to get married and move to Hyderabad, Preetha had to step into her shoes. Though she had grown up seeing her father work at HM Hospital, observing a healthcare business and running one are two entirely polarised propositions. Yet, Preetha, proud of the absence of B-School background, adopted a hands-on approach to the business. In 1989, the group had a turnover of Rs.1 billion. Today, its turnover well exceeds Rs.11 billion, with 44 hospitals, 60 clinics and 600 pharmacies in India and Asia. The group employs over 30,000 people.

Preetha introduced the concept of Tender Loving Care (TLC), which integrated service delivery with clinical outcomes resulting in exceptional patient experiences. She stewarded the JCI accreditation process in four Group Hospitals (Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Dhaka). She is largely instrumental in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai being rated “Grade A” by CRISIL and being one among the two hospitals in India to be awarded a “Grade A” for service and business excellence. She has also redefined hospital networking, telemedicine, hospital management, Day Care Clinics, staff training colleges, hospital BPO and pharmacy retailing. However, what remains closest to her heart is the Group’s CSR initiative: SACH (Save a Child’s Heart) meant for children from economically underprivileged sections of society. SACH has performed over 2000 free/concessional cardiac surgeries and screened over 10,000 children from India & several parts of Africa.

Yet despite all that she has accomplished, her greatest ability has been her unabating humility. They say an ordinary leader looks into a mirror at times of success and sees himself as the one responsible for that achievement. An extraordinary leader, on the other hand, opens a window to point out at all the others responsible for that achievement. Preetha is the latter. The business of family is equally precious to her. Her husband chairs the Board of Trustees at the Kapaleeshwarar Temple while her two sons are waiting in the wings, ready to take their spot under the sun.

Left bounces back in business

IIPM - Admission Procedure

The recent victory in Hamburg has enhanced the Left’s appeal in German coalition politics

A spectre is haunting the capitalist Germany now. The spectre of eastern communism. It’s been almost three decades now since the Berlin Wall was brought down & West Germany triumphed over the East. Throughout this long period, the mainstream German political parties, be it the Christian Democrats (CDU), the Liberal Free Democrats (FDP), the Social Democrats (SPD) or the Greens, collectively treated the children of East German communism as pariahs.

Did they succeed in their effort? Yes, but only until some members of the erstwhile East German Communist Party reinvented themselves in a changed political landscape through the formation of a new political outfit.

The Left Party, daring the de facto political untouchability, set out a fresh campaign, which eventually started producing results. When the results of the Feb. 24 Hamburg state election were out, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU lost absolute majority in the state, which simply endorsed the shift of political Centre to the Left. The CDU won 42.7% of popular votes down from the 47% it bagged in 2004. CDU’s main rival SDP scored 34%, 4% higher than the 2004 figure. The most interesting performance is that of the Left Party which is set to enter the Hamburg Parliament for the first time with 6.5% of the votes. Hamburg result was just the continuation of what happened in the state of Hesse in January. The Christian democrats lost absolute majority in Hesse as the Left Party, along with the Social Democrats, emerged as a crucial player.

When the Left Party bagged some seats in the 2005 general elections, both the conservatives & the Social Democrats joined hands together to deny any national relevance to the communists. That cooperation led to the formation of Volksparteien – the CDU and SPD alliance – which has now become a liability for both the parties. The SPD, which earlier ruled out any kind of alliance with the Left, has now changed its tone, expressing willingness to have an informal power sharing agreement at state levels. In Hesse, they started efforts to win the outside support of the Left. SPD chairman Kurt Beck has backed the move. On the other side, Hamburg’s conservative mayor Ole von Beust is now hoping to retain power by winning the support of the Greens. The Left knows that the current political impasse in the country could not be solved without taking them into the mainstream political process. Today or tomorrow, it has to happen. After all, it is election season in Germany. And the spectres seem to be on their way back.

Nirma’s Hiren Patel has the same instincts as his father, says SAVREEN GADHOKE

Google ‘Hiren Patel’ and you are unlikely to find more than a few links. Search using more key words and there are only a handful of articles that have his reference. That’s the low profile that Hiren maintains, despite being in charge of the Rs.25 billion consumer-care giant, Nirma, along with his brother, Rakesh. Agrees Dipankar Roy, Regional Director, FICCI (Ahmedabad), “He is not very flamboyant and is totally entrenched in his culture. He believes in doing more and talking less. Hiren is a soft-spoken, young, dynamic leader who believes in action.”

For those who know him, he’s in the mould of his father. In his younger days; Karsanbhai started as a small-time chemist at Gujarat’s Department of Mining & Geology, prepared washing powder in his backyard, and started selling 20 packets a day on a bicycle while returning from office. Hiren may emulate his father more over time. When he was older; Karsanbhai took on the might of Unilever when he launched Nirma, which originated from his daughter name, Nirupama. Reminisces Harish Bijoor, CEO, Harish Bijoor Consults, “Nirma was established as a home-grown business with a unique consumer proposition.”

But it was under Hiren’s leadership that the brand reached a new level. From being touted as a value-for-money detergent manufacturer, Nirma made the transition to a premium products maker. For example, Hiren played a key-role in acquiring the India manufacturing, marketing & distribution rights of global beauty care soap, Camay, in 2002. Globally, Camay is owned by P&G Home Products. Call it far-sightedness or sheer instincts, this move increased revenue channels as competition in the soap & detergent market became cut-throat.

While launching two premium variants of Camay, Milk Cream and Saffron, in 2002, Hiren disclosed that he would position the brands in the skin care segment to give them a broader perspective, & price them lower than competitors. He hoped Camay would be able to do well this time, referring to the fact that P&G had earlier failed to reposition the brand in the premium segment.

Even as Nirma has gone forward to acquire a premium image, it has strived to strengthen its backward integration initiatives. On November 27, 2007, it acquired the US-based natural soda ash manufacturer, Searles Valley Minerals. for over $200 million. An official statement said: “The acquisition would enable the company to raise soda ash capacity to more than 2 million tonnes a year, placing it among the world’s top seven producers.” Nirma’s scrip price spiraled, closing at Rs.220.05 on the day, an impressive 7% higher than the previous day’s close. According to news reports, the move gives Nirma an access to low-cost raw material, apart from an entry into newer markets.

Like his father, who created a new market for detergents, Hiren has tried to do the same. When he re-launched Nirma Shudh salt in 2002, he said that the “salt will be a distinct business. We aim to be a major foods player within the next two years. Be it a product or segment, Nirma believes in creating markets.” However, many analysts believe that diversification is not Hiren’s, or Nirma’s, cup of tea. They maintain that each time the group entered new categories, it was unable to make an impact.

For instance, Camay has a miniscule share in the marketplace. The salt business is still quite small as a proportion of the group’s overall turnover. It’s only in the bread-n-butter business of soaps and detergents that the group is doing well. According to the latest report by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, Nirma commands a 20% market share in the detergent powder segment. The company recorded consolidated net profits of Rs.1.15 billion and net sales of Rs.22.9 billion in 2006-07.

In addition, there’s a question mark on the management capabilities of the Patel brothers, Hiren and Rakesh. Critics claim that they have been unable to make the shift from being a family-managed firm to professionally-run. An analyst at FICCI, who started his career at Nirma, says, “I felt that they lacked professionalism and were conservative. But, of course, they are hard working. And whatever may be their successes and failures, they take it on their own shoulders.”

Also, Hirenbhai, as he is fondly called within the organisation, has managed to strike an emotive chord with his employees. “Once an employee committed a grave mistake because of which the company incurred losses. Hirenbhai took control of the situation, and made sure the matter was not leaked publicly. And, in a calm manner, he explained the repercussions of such mistakes to the employee. The idea was that the individual realises his folly and does not repeat it again,” recalls a current employee.

Adds the same employee, “Hirenbhai knows how to take care of people. It is his care and the individual importance he bestows on employees that has enabled him to motivate them. No wonder, in Nirma, all employees share a long-term relationship with the organization.” And Roy of FICCI adds, “Hiren is a soft-spoken, young, and dynamic leader who believes in action.” Maybe, these are the qualities that have worked in his favour. Whether Hiren emulates the successes of his father or not, the fact remains that the MD of Nirma Consumer Care lives in a world that’s defined by one mantra – take Nirma to newer heights.

Greening up the world & UN

IIPM : EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

Ban quietly begins to make his mark on Earth

It was the year which saw, an Asian, complete his first year in ‘world’s most impossible job’ - as his predecessor Kofi Annan, described the job, while handing over reins to eighth Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, of South Korea. The year, he said, didn’t give him the honeymoon, which his predecessors got, as he went about the task of making progress on Millennium Development Goals, the crisis of genocide in Darfur and of Iraq. It has been said that the big powers wanted him as they wanted an ineffective and inactive person at the helm of the world body. But belying all Western expectations, the Korean has been effective in getting world’s rulers to business on climate change issue. The real task most wanted him to set out on was, as he said, “The reform of the UN, which has been put off for the past 60 years, must be carried out in earnest.” He further needs to see through the Millennium Development Goals, to make the world better, by 2015. He is also expected to promote multi-lateralism & ensure that US unilateralism is not allowed to checkmate global institutions & regulations.

Beyond the glittering perception...

IIPM’s 36th Glorious Year of Academic Excellence

Are skyscrapers the ideal benchmark to define development?

It is said, “All that glitters, is not gold.” But there are people of wisdom with holistic views, who believe the opposite. So, if New York City’s skyline glitter over the shore at night, wisdom says it is the 24 carat gold that is shining. The rich New York has a coterie of rich friends apart from her American brothers. Whether it is Big Ben, Eiffel Tower or Monorail, these shining princess’ privilege and position draws adulation and idolatry from millions across the world while Indians dream that their cities draw same kind of admiration as our Western counterpart. Yet, Mumbai (India’s commercial capital) is simmering under grave infrastructure problems. As much as 54% of Mumbai’s population lives in slums, making it maximum in Asia. India’s capital, Delhi, has a figure of 20%. The living condition in these vast urban ghettos is pathetic to say the least with nest of 100 sq. ft. of thatched hut with no sanitation, no sewage and extremely poor drainage system. The roadways in Mumbai (albeit concrete) are below par because of poor maintenance and misappropriation of funds.

Delhi on the other hand has tar roads – but well maintained, compulsively done being the capital. Kolkata has tar roads too, but not well maintained at all, for decades now. Both Mumbai & Delhi has shortage of power creating frequent power cuts – unheard of in developed economies. Does London have beggars in the streets? Not many. Neither there are too may in Paris. But Mumbai boast of three lakhs, and Delhi have 58,000 on their streets. So behind the shining mask of Indian cities, lies ugly face of poverty, malnutrition, lack of social infrastructure and most importantly, hope for the future. Unless these factors are addressed and solved the glossy face of ‘India Shining’ cannot be sustained over a long period of time.

Dressed for all ‘Seasons’!

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

It’s small... but it’s growing fast... much faster than you thought!

From fibre to fashion, the budding (rather, blooming!) Indian textile industry is creating memorable ripples on the global ramp – and you could easily swear by this truth. So whom do we bestow encomiums upon for taking India Inc.’s textile arm to the stars? Of course,we can’t miss out on the blue chip heavyweights. But then, there’s more to it than meets the eye – for can we afford to belittle the achievements of the lesser known and smaller organisations splatterred across the Indian textile vertical band? Certainly not!

And one among the small wonders is Seasons Furnishing Ltd. – an emerging identity in the world of textiles, making a name for itself amidst the clutter of wannabes...From the onset of its corporate journey, the ultimate goal for Seasons Furnishing Ltd. was crystal clear – to make an everlasting impression for itself in the world of textiles. Talk about it - cushion covers, bedsheets, sofa linen et al; it’s product offering is indeed wide and promises high quality standards. And what about competition on a global scale and the threat from the international bigwigs? To this, Founder MD, Mandeep S. Wadhwa, deftly replied, “When we started-off, there were no foreign players in luxury segment of the furnishing market. So we knew that we will have an early mover advantage. But at the same time, I knew that it wasn’t long before foreign players jumped into the scene. Keeping this in mind, we never segregated between the products that we exported and the ones we sold in India. And this hasn’t changed since...”

Bucked up with his wonderful experience in exports, from just being an unbranded & unorganised player, he formed Seasons Furnishings Ltd in 1994. Sounds smooth, doesn’t it? Right, but wait before you mistake it to be a rose-laden path... With India being a price-sensitive war-zone, ‘high prices’ proved a major bottleneck as Mandeep recollects, “It’s not that there was no customer for this type of expensive luxury product; but being an unknown brand, people were not willing to spend on our products.” To its relief though, with time, its tie-ups with other furnishing shops ensured some reassuring presence in the market. Thereafter, he rolled-out exclusive stand-alone stores additionally roping-in foreign brands for his stores.

Sahoo gives his take on building the talent base in Reliance’s ongoing mammoth retail initiative, “Our plan is to build the supply side of the talent. We have done the need analysis and are working on the development plan; in this country we have a lot of raw talent and we need to transform that talent. You can take talent from the industry; however, the industry has limited availability and the only way is to create this talent by building the supply side of the talent.” Sahoo’s statement gains more ground if one looks at the estimates by Technopak that project the organised retail sector in the country to grow at a CAGR of 28-32% from 2007 to 2020 and touch a 35-40% share of retail consumer spending in India. An elementary logic surfaces: With the industry growing, the demand of skilled labour (read as professionals) would also surge. The government’s decision to ease the FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) regulations would only fuel this demand further. All these situations would help renovate the talent landscape of the country in the near future. Now if one were to assume the growth of the Indian economy at 8% and elasticity of employment at 0.30, then with the population under the age of 15 in the country (currently at about 435 million), McKinsey estimates an overall level of about 5.1% of the population would be educated till the college level by 2020. This clearly implies that a small percentage of educated population would be still vacant to take up a job offer in the retail sector. All the statistics indicate there would be a shortage of talent by 2020, clearly sending a warning signal to retail companies to pull up their socks and build the supply side of talent brick-by-brick in order to meet their requirement, failing which the sector would suffer from want of talent. If one were to plot a supply-demand curve between skill level and workforce, one would find an overloaded supply of workforce at the bottom of the chart and the supply of talent dwindling as skills become more sophisticated and technical. This finding represents at once, a challenge and an opportunity to the retail sector. The test would be to find the right guy for the right profile in a labour market that is constrained. An opportunity for the retail companies would be to advance the skill sets of the surplus workforce at the lowermost levels by educating, training and employing them at entry-level positions.

Sahoo, who believes in operating straight from the heart, while speaking on Reliance Retail’s training module states, “You need specialisation and also you need people who can perform the generalist kind of roles. We focus on specialisation and we are also nurturing people to be leaders who can be multiple specialists in their team and can deliver the general management goals.” Training and nurturing the right talent would help unleash a socio-economic revolution in our country. This situation requires a significant amount of time, money and effort to be spent on creating a strong retail company, driven totally by talent and having a sturdy Employment Value Proposition (EVP) generating attractiveness in the employment market, thereby enhancing commitment and productivity of the workforce.

If one were to define EVP – it is an aggregation of People at Workplace, Quality of Work, Opportunities for Growth, Organisational Culture and Recognition & Rewards that an employee would expect from his job. Research also indicates that companies maintaining a healthy EVP end up paying only 11% premium to attract talent, in comparison to a figure of 21% for those who don’t manage one!

Challenges notwithstanding, this sector is too full of opportunities and would generate an enormous amount of employment that would transform the socio-economic scenario in India. However, effective steps need to be taken to implement a talent transformation approach, emphasising on recruitment of freshers with the right attitude and nurturing them into full-fledged professionals in this industry through necessary inputs to hone their skill sets... So, next time you overhear one discussing how the sun is already shining o’er the retail sector, you’d better believe him!

Take the Royal road to success!

When IIPM comes to education, never compromise

Flexibility and creativity will be critical for success, says Ajay Bimbhet

Ever Take the Royal road to success!since the market opened up, the insurance industry has exhibited impressive performance. Where do you see it a few years down the line? Increased consumer awareness of the benefits and the importance of insurance and re-insurance has generated many more buyers. The introduction of new standard market wordings and buoyancy in automobile and health insurance is currently driving growth in the general insurance industry.

De-tariffing has the potential to transform and liberalise the insurance market. Furthermore, it will lead to the Indian market achieving global standards in underwriting and risk management besides encouraging innovation.

How do you plan to further strengthen Royal Sundaram’s retail business?
A substantial share of the retail business can be captured by expanding geographical distribution and by using innovative channels. Flexibility and creativity will be critical for success in the move towards retail – for example, innovative new products in terms of cash-less hospitalisation products will be deployed quickly and efficiently. Easier payment options to suit individual requirements; customised policies tailor-made for the prospective clients and dedicated service points are already beginning to revolutionise the market.

Can you elaborate on your rural strategy?
Royal Sundaram’s rural business has grown, contributing 8% of the total premium. At Royal Sundaram, we have always realised and catered products to the specific needs of the rural markets. We have ambitious plans to expand in this segment and increase our customer base. Royal Sundaram has crossed 6%, which is above the obligatory levels of 5%.

Our rural business has grown considerably with wider distribution network and innovative range of products. We have tailor-made products to address the specific needs of the rural household. As an example, Royal Sundaram’s Gramin Arogya Raksha, a unique health insurance scheme for the benefit of the rural sector covers critical illness, hospital cash & personal accident.

A host of banks and others have evinced keen interest in setting up insurance ventures. Do you think this will lead to overcrowding?
We welcome competition as it is healthy for the sector.

What kind of precautions are you taking to ensure sound business practices?
We strive to understand the needs of our customers and fulfil those needs, besides insisting on strict adherence to the regulations of the country. Today, we have over 1.7 million satisfied customers who bear testimony to the success of our insurance solutions. Our excellence in customer service has fetched us a creditable score of 82% in the ACNielsen Customer Satisfaction Survey for the 3rd year.

Which innovative products do you plan to come out with, in the future?
We are constantly making innovations in our products to service the changing needs of our customers. Royal Sundaram has consistently made an effort towards innovation in personal insurance products in health, motor and accident. Our focus in the coming years will be on product innovation in the personal insurance sector and the continued support of our valued customer base.
